For multiplying and dividing, two signs that match give a positive answer and two that differ give a negative one. Adding and subtracting is better shown on a number line than with rules.

Teaching tip

Have students rewrite every subtraction as adding the opposite (5 − (−3) becomes 5 + 3) before they solve.
