About this worksheet
To make an improper fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 3 2/5 becomes (3 × 5 + 2)/5 = 17/5. Going back, divide: 17 ÷ 5 is 3 remainder 2, so 3 2/5.
This generator makes worksheets for converting mixed numbers to improper fractions, improper fractions to mixed numbers, or both on one sheet. Denominators go up to 6, 10, 12 or 20.
Change each mixed number to an improper fraction, or each improper fraction to a mixed number.

Draw the first two problems as pictures (whole pizzas plus slices). Once students see why the multiplication works, they stop memorizing steps.
